The F-Gas 2079 Category 1 certification is the industry-recognised qualification required for engineers who install, service, maintain and repair refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems containing fluorinated gases.
This course provides the training and assessment required to comply with the UK F-Gas Regulations and allows engineers to legally handle refrigerants such as R410A, R32 and other HFC refrigerants.
The qualification focuses on safe refrigerant handling, environmental protection and industry best practice, combining both theoretical knowledge and practical assessment.
Category 1 is the highest level of F-Gas certification and allows engineers to carry out the full range of refrigerant handling activities.
This course is suitable for:
- Refrigeration engineers
- Air conditioning engineers
- Heat pump engineers
- HVAC service technicians
- Engineers working with fluorinated refrigerants
- New career pathway
This certification is typically required for engineers working on:
- Install refrigeration and air conditioning systems
- Service and maintain equipment containing F-Gas refrigerants
- Carry out leak detection
- Recover refrigerant from systems
- Pressure test refrigeration systems
- Evacuate and charge refrigeration systems
- The course includes both classroom learning and practical training covering all aspects of refrigerant handling.
- Basic systems, principles and units and how they relate to theory and thermodynamics of vapour compression cycles and refrigerants
- Causes and effects of global warming and ozone depletion
- Identification of air conditioning and heat pump components, functions and leakage risk
- Hazards and safe working practices
- Construction and examination of pipe work
- Recovery of refrigerant and oil and prepare for disposal
- Pressure testing, evacuation and record completion
- Refrigerant charging, leak checking and record keeping
- Fabrication and fitting of mechanical and brazed joints
- While this course focuses primarily on Category 1, other certification levels are available depending on the work being carried out.
- CATEGORY 2
- Servicing and maintenance of systems less than 3kg charge
- Refrigerant recovery
- Leak checking
- CATEGORY 3
- Refrigerant recovery only
- CATEGORY 4
- Leak checking only without breaking into the refrigeration system.
Upon successful completion candidates will receive the F-Gas 2079 Category 1 certificate, which allows engineers to legally handle fluorinated refrigerants within the UK.
Following certification, engineers must ensure they are registered with the relevant F-Gas Company Certification Scheme before undertaking work that falls within the scope of the F-Gas Regulations.
This qualification is widely recognised across the HVAC and refrigeration industry.
